What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that is spread to humans from an infected tick bite. Not every single tick has the bacteria that can infect a person and only those ticks that are infected will pass the infection on to the human that they bite.

What are the main symptoms of Lyme Disease?

The thing to remember about Lyme Disease is that the earlier it is caught then the better chance you will have to treat your symptoms and recover from them. The problem is, it can be hard to distinguish when you actually have been bitten by an infected tick and have been passed on the disease.
The first sign is usually a circular red skin rash, with raised edges which will appear around the tick bite, however, to make things even harder to diagnose, the rash doesn’t always appear on everyone. The rash usually appears within the first 4 weeks after being bitten, however, it can sometimes take up to 3 months for the rash to appear. It has the appearance of a bull's eye, which can be quite distinctive.
Other common symptoms of Lyme Disease, and the ones that can have a huge impact on your life are:
  • A high temperature, which can make you either feel hot or shivery
  • Headaches
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • A loss of energy and a persistent tiredness

You may also find that you show some of the following symptoms:
  • Swelling in the joints with severe pain
  • Nerve problems, such as numbness or even pain
  • Problems with your heart
  • Memory and concentration issues
